Blanket Guidelines

          Blanket Guidelines

We accept new hand made blankets of any size made from new fabric or yarn, but please read and follow the General and Specific blanket making guidelines so that we are able to label them from Project Linus and distribute them to children.      (Blankets we are not able to label and distribute due to not following guidelines may be delivered to other organizations without the Project Linus label or endorsement of our chapter or the National organization)

General Guidelines   (blanket size categories listed in a chart below)
+Make blankets from new, clean, washable materials in infant, child, or teen friendly colors and designs.

+No wool content.  No religious or holiday designs.

+Blankets must be free from dirt, smoke and chemical odors such fabric softeners,

and also free from pet hair.

+Do not use materials that have been stored in a damp area, or have a musty smell.

Mold spores can remain even if materials are washed and there is no longer a musty smell.

Spores are still present and can cause respiratory problems.

+Do not attach decorative items such as buttons or puff balls onto the blankets as they are a choking hazard.

+** child/teen blankets should be at least 45" wide

*Fleece blankets should be made from a single layer of blizzard or anti-pill fleece.

++Please do not use "make it and give it" kits sold that have extremely thin fabric.

+Edges can be serged, hemmed, finished with a decorative crochet border,

or fringed with knots or slipped through a slit.

+For all fleece blankets,      use sharp scissors or a rotary cutter for smooth cuts

+Selvage edges must be trimmed off first, and sides must be evened.

(Selvage= wavy sides with small holes punched all along the side, one side may have writing.

+All Fringes should be same lengths and same widths around entire blanket.  (ex: 1" wide x 4" long)

+Blankets should lay flat when opened--

( if knotted, make the knot in middle of fringe rather than against blanket)

+** child/teen blankets should be at least 45" wide

(Directions for 2 types of single layer fringe blankets at bottom of page)

*Yarn blankets should be made with soft, washable yarn. (no wool please)

+Knit or crochet patterns and designs with close stitches work best for children, rather than lacey designs             with large holes that little fingers might get tangled in.

+Please do not just tie yarn and cut close to the knot, as knots can come

loose in washing. Please make a tight knot, then weave yarn ends in,

or work your stitches over yarn ends.)

+Please keep in mind the yarn size/weight and the size of the blanket a child will be using.

+** child/teen blankets should be at least 45" wide

Quilts can be made from 100% washable cotton or flannel. (no wool)

+Secure batting into outer seams, and  quilt or tie it at least every  4" to keep batting from disintegrating              during washings.     (exception= if using "needle punched" batting, quilting can be farther apart)

+low loft batting is preferred

+fleece or flannel can be used as a backing and may replace batting
